 Mage Talent Builds
There are three talent trees to choose from for
your Mage talent builds when
specializing in a Mage character in World of Warcraft: Arcane, Fire, and Frost.
Generally speaking, the Arcane spec is a mix of offensive and defensive skills; the Fire and
Frost categories are nearly self-explanatory as they increase the strength, effectiveness, and
immunity of Fire and Frost spells. Fire focuses a bit more on offensive strength, while Frost
makes the character stronger on defense. Here's an in-depth look at these three talent trees to
help players decide which talent tree suits their own WoW playing style best.

Arcane Talent Tree
The Arcane talent tree provides a versatile set of skills, but is also one of the least popular
specs for Mage characters and is often a complaint of WoW players.
The first tier of the Arcane talent tree consists of three talents: Subtlety, Focus, and Arcane
Stability. Subtlety reduces the chance that spells will be dispelled and reduces the threat caused
by Arcane spells; Focus increases the chance to hit and reduces the mana spent by Arcane spells;
Stability reduces the pushback suffered from casting Arcane Missiles and Arcane Blast.
Of these three talents, Focus and Stability are the most useful. Subtlety is useful for raiding
Mages, but for PvP Mages, the other two talents are more effective.
Fire Talent Tree
The Fire tree was once the most popular spec for Mage characters. However, in more recent
history, an increasing number of characters now possess fire-resistant gear, making them impervious
to (or at least more protected from) Fire class spells and talents. Still, of the three talent
trees, the Fire tree remains somewhat popular. While not as versatile as the Arcane tree and not
offering as much protection as the Frost tree, the Fire talent tree contains many potent offensive
skills for Mages.
The first tier of the Fire talent tree has three talents: Improved Fire Blast, Incineration, and
Improved Fireball. Improved Fire Blast reduces the cool down of the Fire Blast spell by one second
for each talent point invested. Incineration increases the chance of a critical strike by Fire
Blast, Scorch, Arcane Blast, and Cone of Cold spells – making this a very useful offensive talent.
Improved Fireball reduces casting time of the Fireball spell.
Frost Talent Tree
The Frost tree trades places periodically with the Fire talent tree as the most popular spec for
Mage talent builds. Its emphasis is more on survivability for the Mage character and is more
mana-efficient.
The first tier of the Frost talent tree has these three talents: Frostbite, Improved Frostbolt,
and Ice Floes. Frostbite gives the Chill effect a better chance at freezing opponents; Improved
Frostbolt reduces the casting time of the Frostbolt spell; and Ice Floes, like Improved Fire Blast
in the Fire tree, reduces the cool-down time for Cone of Cold, Ice Block, and Icy Veins spells.
As with all character specs in World of Warcraft, there is not one “best” spec for the Mage
character. It really depends upon playing style, such as playing PvP (player versus player), raid
(working with a team for large-scale attacks), or arena (tournament play). There are some standard
